Remembrance Day

Today is Remembrance Day in Australia. It's a time when we all stop and remember those who fought and died in World War 1.

At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous war.

On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minutes’ silence is observed and dedicated to the soldiers who had died fighting to protect our nation.

In Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, 11 November became known as Armistice Day – a day to remember those who died in World War One. The day continues to be commemorated in Allied countries.

Lest we forget.

We honor it here in America, as you mentioned. It's known colloquially as Veterans Day, although I wouldn't be surprised if Armistice Day were the correct title for it. Either way, it's such an important, solemn occasion of remembrance and gratitude. Happy November!

Hi Caryn,
I just saw this comment. So sorry to be late in replying. Been hooked into books. :)

Yes, it was originally called Armistice Day and changed here, I believe.

I agree. :)
