A REAL PAGE TURNER

A REAL PAGE TURNER I've recently finished a novel, Titled Gone, by Karen Fenech. Well they say you have to hook the reader and keep her there. I have been studying how writers are doing it and it is to give them a character they can relate to, a character they can have empathy for.

In Gone the first sentence hooked me, and I immediately asked questions, lots of them.

First sentence. 'In Seven minutes her mother was being executed.'

Whaaaatttttt???? Why, what happened? How come? I kept reading.

The Heroine is a Special Agent, Clare Marshall. (Now I've been keeping away from all the cop type stories, but this one didn't have cops running around everywhere etc.)

'Clare had been five when her mother pointed a gun at her head.'

Another sentence a few paragraphs later. What, why????

The mother had shot her brother, and she has a little sister.

The story was amazing, well done, and so so suspenseful. I loved it. If you like romantic suspense this is a book you must read. :)

Okay, off to do some more NaNo Words. lol. :) Have a lovely day, :)

How in the heck did you find time to read a novel in the middle of writing a book?

In any case, the opening hook was fantastic. Sounds like a book we could all learn from as authors.
Thanks for sharing.

lol Hi Kaye.
It's something I don't usually do. But at night I don't always write. It took me two nights to read. :) Once I was hooked that was it. I have always stated that I don't read when I write, but this suddenely changed.
Okay, I've got the afternoon to write. Have a lovely evening.
